This holiday weekend, you can do one of two things: watch a bunch of fireworks, or blast truck-sized insects into orbit. I think the choice it pretty clear.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon was set to launch next week, but retailers are selling it early. Did D3Publisher move the date to give people something to do over the extended weekend? Are retailers simply giving up? One thing's for sure: I personally strolled into a store an hour ago, plunked down $ 40, and grabbed a copy. You may want to call ahead before hopping into your car, but I am living proof that dreams do come true.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go do…something.

Sony's PSPVita is a powerful piece of hardware, and a demonstration at a recent forum in Japan shows that its capable of real-time video chat — complete with avatars that respond to your facial expressions.

Siliconera posted the link and translated a story from the Japanese gaming site 4Gamer, which showed footage from a recent demonstration given at the Game Tools & Middleware Forum 2011 in Tokyo.

The video, which you can watch below, shows two people talking over live video chat, but with a twist — the actual display shows two avatars (a small doll and a tiger) conveying all the users facial expressions (which are assumedly captured through the PSPVita front-facing camera). It's a very interesting demo, and shows once again that the Vita is a pretty advanced piece of hardware.
